Guide to properties for sale in Sotogrande

Sotogrande is well known as one of the most luxurious and exclusive locations on the southern Andalucian coastline. It lies within the municipality of San Roque at the western tip of the coast and it is a quiet area with many fashionable and high class facilities.

Good taste has been retained here and you will only ever find the very highest quality developments, restaurants and bars. You will never find any ugly high rise hotel complexes or rowdy nightclubs in Sotogrande as the area is a fine example of quality and taste. Sotogrande enjoys a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere which attracts visitors all year round.

Sotogrande covers an area of approximately 5000 acres and it incorporates several golf courses, a world-famous polo club and a marina. There are also two fantastic beaches and the area is home to the Guardiaro estuary, which covers more than 27 hectares of protected natural marshland. This is an extremely popular place for birdwatchers but it is also a great place to enjoy a stroll along the wooden walkways and just take in the great outdoors.

Back in the 1970s Sotogrande was practically uninhabited with only a few country homes dotted across the landscape. Nowadays it is one of the most exclusive residential developments in Europe, which enjoys the tranquillity of the countryside together with the life and buzz of the rest of the coast.

When the first developments began to take place in Sotogrande, a great deal of thought was put into the landscaping of the area. Many palm lined avenues were strategically erected to conceal unsightly infrastructure. This ethos has continued over the years and so the growth of the area has never affected the beauty of the area.

Due to the geographical location of Sotogrande, which sits at the foothills of Sierra Almenara, the area enjoys a spectacular and diverse landscape. There is the choice of the dramatic Atlantic beaches where annual surfing competitions take place or for a more tranquil seaside experience, choose the quiet coves of the Mediterranean.

Nearby, in The Straits of Gibraltar, dolphins and sometimes whales can be seen. Dolphins are spotted so often that you can go on an organised Dolphin viewing trip. It is a magical experience to watch them swimming along side the boat and definitely not one to be missed.

The two main beaches of Sotogrande are both long and sandy with plenty of facilities. There are two large beach clubs to choose from as well so if you fancy a dip in the pool as well as the sea...you can!

The El Octogano Beach Club has been open since 1980 and it caters for everyone. It has an adult only area with a separate pool and lawned area to relax and sunbathe. The children have their own section too and during the summer months there are organized activities taking place here and a lifeguard to oversee their safety.

You can choose from an extensive range of water sports at El Octagono and all the activities are well supervised. You can also try your hand at sailing here. In addition to the usual activities, such as jet skis and pedaloes, there is catamaran sailing from the sailing school, waterskiing and kayaking on the river where the river mouth has formed a natural lagoon.

The El Cucurucho Beach Club is the second of Sotogrande´s beachside venues. This is the areas original beach club and it has been superbly maintained. You can enjoy its beautiful lawns, relax on its neatly arranged sun loungers and keep cool under the shady parasols. With its quality buffet restaurant, its bar area and the fact that the beach is only steps away; it is more like a self contained luxury resort rather than a beach club! There are four pools with lifeguards, showers, sauna, massage and changing rooms. During the summer months there are swimming lessons, water games, beach games and workshops to keep the children entertained. If you are staying at the Almenara Hotel then you will be able to use all of these facilities for free.

Although much of southern Spain enjoys its busiest period in the summer, Sotogrande is particularly bustling throughout winter too. Many big regattas take place in Sotogrande and attract large crowds from all over the world.

The marina at Sotogrande was established in 1987. It currently has 600 berths and there are plans to extend this number to over 1000. The port area also has a number of high quality bars and restaurants and some exclusive little boutique style shops as well. On Sundays and Wednesdays you will find that there is a street market selling some exquisite local antiques, arts and crafts.

One attraction that is exclusive to Sotogrande is the polo club, which – because of the climate – is the only place in Europe where polo can be played all year round. Tournaments often take place at the club as well as prestigious local events. The club specializes in polo training so you will be able to have some polo lessons here or even buy an ex-polo horse. If you are interested in horses or the sport in general, a visit to the club and a wander around its stables will be a great day out.

But probably the jewel in Sotogrande´s crown is the area’s plentiful and exceptional-quality golf courses. Club de Golf Valderrama is one of the most famous golf courses in the world. The 1997 Ryder Cup was held here and most golfers can’t resist trying the course at least once when they are visiting. The World Golf award for the number 1 course was awarded to Valderrama again in November 2003. The number 7 position was awarded to Sotogrande´s old course Real Club de Golf and that combined with the course awarded position 35, the three courses in the area form what is known as the Golden Triangle. The golf prices in this area are not the cheapest as you are paying for the quality and reputation. But if you are looking for something a little better value, you won’t be stuck for choice either as there are roughly 40 other courses all within a 1 hour drive from Sotogrande.

Sotogrande and its surrounding areas are experiencing constant improvement and expansion at the moment with luxury, good quality properties and new facilities springing up all over. Here you can witness probably the best example of up market residential tourism on the coast. It is predicted that over the next few years this area will become one of southern Andalucia´s most important leisure areas and because of this, Sotogrande is an excellent place to invest for the future or to simply live a dream life in the sun!
