Sotogrande lies in between Alcaidesa and Duquesa towards the western end of the coast in southern Andalucia. It is a relatively young area, which was developed specifically for luxury living and tourism around 40 years ago.
Today Sotogrande covers 5000 acres and includes a world-famous polo club, a marina and a variety of world class golf courses. There are two beaches and the area is home to a large swathe of protected natural marshland.
There are two luxury beach clubs in Sotogrande called El Octogono and El Cucurucho.
At El Octogono, visitors can take a dip in one of the swimming pools or enjoy something to eat at one of the bars and restaurants. The club is family friendly and there are specific children’s areas, with shallow pools, where entertainment and activities are often provided.
The beach clubs are also excellent places to have a go at water sports including sailing, water skiing, jet skiing and more.
One of the loveliest parts of Sotogrande is the port area, where you will find fantastic boats alongside smart restaurants, attractive bars and tempting shops. You can even rent a boat here and there are full harbour facilities available.
The area of Sotogrande is most famous for its sports facilities, which are considered to be some of the best in the world. The area is particularly popular with golfers, polo players and those interested in sailing.
Golf is something of a national pastime in Spain, and three of the best courses in the world are in the Sotogrande area. First of all, the area is home to the famous Valderrama Club de Golf, which has won a variety of prestigious awards. Valderrama played host to the Ryder Cup championships in 1997 and is one of Save Ballesteros´s favourite courses.
The other two courses of particular note in this area – although there are many more excellent golf clubs around – are Sotogrande course itself and the course at San Roque. Golf fans from around the world travel to southern Spain to play at these three clubs and if you are a keen golfer then it is an experience that you will remember for ever.
In addition to golf, another sport that Sotogrande is famous for is Polo. As the area has the major advantage of enjoying the best climate in mainland Europe, it is possible to play polo at Sotogrande all year round. This is the only place in Europe where this is possible. The Santa Maria Polo Club is a major attraction and many famous players have trained and taken part in matches here.
Sailing is the remainder of the three biggest sports in the Sotogrande area and the port area regularly plays host to sailing championships and regattas. There are many other sports facilities in the area too including diving clubs, horse riding, tennis, swimming, football and more.
Sotogrande is also a great place to base yourself if you would like to explore a little more of southern Andalucia and the area surrounding the Campo de Gibraltar. There are many interesting places within a short distance including the surfers´ paradise of Tarifa, Gibraltar, Ronda, and the celebrity playground of Puerto Banus is close by too! If you are feeling adventurous then you could even take a ferry across the sea to Tangier, gateway to Morocco and North Africa.
