Getting to Puerto Duquesa
Duquesa lies on the western end of the coast and it is easy to reach from two international airports. If you drive 25 minutes west of Duquesa you will reach Gibraltar airport, which has daily flights to the UK.
The more popular option however is to drive one hour east to the large international airport at Malaga. The airport at Malaga is rapidly expanding and offers hundreds of low cost flights daily to almost every regional airport in the UK and Ireland and to many popular European destinations.
If you are flying into Malaga and are planning to drive to the Duquesa area from there, then you need to head for the main N340 coast road as soon as you leave the airport. The N340 is also known as the A7 in some places, so watch out for both on the road signs as it can be confusing!
Other than the potential for being puzzled by the road signs, the journey to Duquesa is very straightforward from Malaga airport!
You need to follow signs towards the N340/A7 towards Cadiz and Algeciras. When you first leave the airport you will briefly drive on the MA-21 before bearing right just after the big San Miguel brewery. This will take you onto a busy main road and you need to keep in the inside lane as you will need to bear right again, following A7 / N340 signs, just after the BMW garage on your right.
You are now on the main A7 / N340 coast road which will take you all the way to Duquesa. This is an extremely busy road so make sure you take care when driving and watch out for cars coming off the many slip roads on the right hand side.
Once you have left the airport you will pass by Torremolinos and Benalmadena. Just before you reach Fuengirola you will have the option of moving across to drive on the AP7 toll road. You have to pay to use each individual section of the toll road, but if you are travelling down the coast as far as Duquesa you may prefer to use it. The toll road is much faster and much less busy than the main coast road so driving on it will shorten your journey time by up to 20 minutes.
If you would prefer to use the toll road then keep your eyes peeled for the two electronic signs above the carriageway that show you where to go. To stay on the coast road keep to the right hand land or the middle lane and to use the toll road you can use the middle lane or the left hand lane. The journey down the coast will take you past Fuengirola, Marbella, Puerto Banus, San Pedro Alcantara, Estepona and Sabinillas before you arrive in Duquesa.
If you are flying into Gibraltar then the journey to Duquesa is even more straightforward. Just cross the border into La Linea and follow the signs towards the N340 / A7 in the direction of Estepona, Marbella and Malaga. You will pass alongside the resort of Sotogrande before arriving in Duquesa, which is well signposted from the main road.
Getting to Duquesa via public transport means you will have to take the bus or a taxi, as there are no train services operating on this part of the coast. If you are arriving at Gibraltar airport then the easiest thing to do is to walk across the border to La Linea where you will be able to pick up a bus heading towards Estepona that will take you through Duquesa.
From Malaga airport, you will need to take the coach to Marbella bus station and then change there for a bus heading towards Manilva and Duquesa. Alternatively, taxis are available outside the arrivals halls at both Malaga and Gibraltar airports.
