Exploring Puerto Banus

There is plenty to do in Puerto Banus, whether you are here for a day, a week or you want to take advantage of the weather and live here all year round!

Named after Jose Banus, who was a local property developer, the port was officially opened in a blaze of glory in May 1970. Since then the area has grown in fame and popularity and has won a number of awards for tourism. The area regularly attracts celebrities including David Beckham and premiership footballers, Spanish royalty and Antonio Banderas.

The main draw for the majority of visitors to the area is the port itself. Even if you are not a sailing aficionado, you can’t help but be impressed by the sheer size, number and luxury of the boats and yachts moored at the ports jetties. In fact, your visit to Puerto Banus won’t be complete until you’ve enjoyed a lazy wander around the front line of the port itself.

More than 900 boats are regularly moored there ranging from small leisure boats to the magnificent and opulent yachts, complete with crew, hostesses and every luxury you can imagine. The entrance to the marina even has its own petrol station to cater for the boat traffic using the area.

In keeping with the wealth that is synonymous with the area, the portside is lined with luxury cars including some very rare models, such as Ferrari Enzos and Bentley convertibles. Owners have to pay a lot for a license to park their cars within the exclusive port area. And most days you will see the luxury cars cruising around the marina as their drivers pose and shake the dust of their prized possessions.

When you have finished admiring the cars and boats, there are plenty of chic restaurants and bars lining the port where you can take a break and watch the world go by. On a sunny day with the majestic mountains in the background, it’s a breathtaking place to be.

This part of Puerto Banus is also the centre for designer shops, many of which stay open late into the night to attract the wealthiest clientele before and after they go out to eat.

Away from the port itself, there’s plenty to do in the way of sunbathing, sports and leisure. In the area directly around Banus you will find two beaches and nine 18-hole golf courses – including a floodlit course for night time playing. There is also one 9-hole course, with a number of new courses under construction nearby. As with everywhere else around southern Andalucia, golf is a year-round draw in this area and golfers are extremely well catered for.

The nightlife in Puerto Banus is legendary and the entire area is peppered with fantastic places to eat, drink and while the nights away. Other attractions include an outdoor auditorium, a marine observatory, a casino, a cinema that regularly shows films in English, and many tennis and sports clubs.

Nueva Andalucia, the area directly next to Puerto Banus, also has a variety of shops and a very popular outdoor market which takes place every Saturday morning close to the now-closed bullring. The market stretches all the way to Puerto Banus and makes a great morning’s entertainment.

Property in Puerto Banus is highly sought after and, as you might expect for such a popular area, represents an excellent investment.
