Getting to Nerja
The town of Nerja lies approximately 55 kilometres east of the city of Malaga at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol.
The town is directly on the Mediterranean Sea and is very easy to find from the main carretera national 340 coast road (the N340), which runs the entire length of the coast.
The easiest way to arrive in Nerja is to fly into the large international airport at Malaga, which is approximately 60 km from Nerja. You could also fly into Granada airport, which is also within driving distance. However Malaga airport is definitely more convenient as the drive to Granada will take you around 1.5 hours from Nerja.
If you are flying into Malaga airport then your onward journey to Nerja will be very straightforward. If you are planning to drive to Nerja then you need to follow signs towards Malaga, Granada and Nerja from the main roundabout at the front of the airport. Make sure you stay in the right hand lane as you come out of the airport as the left hand lanes will take you towards Algeciras and Cadiz.
On your way out of the airport you will follow signs towards the MA-21 towards Malaga. You will drive past the large San Miguel brewery on your right and then you will head over a flyover. Once you are over the flyover you need to keep your eyes open for the sign that says Malaga ring road or the Ronda de Malaga and you need to come off at this exit. It will be signed towards Motril and the N340 main coast road. Once you are on the N340 you need to stay on this road until you see signs for Nerja. The journey will take you around 35 minutes and the town is clearly signed so you will not miss it.
If you do not have a car then there are a variety of other ways for you to arrive at your destination of Nerja. It is extremely easy to find a taxi at Malaga airport as there are normally 100s lined up outside the arrivals hall. Just head out of the main exit doors in arrivals and you will see signs towards the taxi rank and a line of white taxis with green lights on top. When the green light is on then the taxi is available. The ride to Nerja will take 35 minutes and will cost between 70€ and 80€.
If you are planning to arrive in Nerja by using public transport then you have a couple of options open to you. There is both a local bus and train service from Malaga airport to the centre of Malaga city. Buses leave from outside the arrivals hall every half hour for the bus station. Trains also leave every half hour and the train station is signed from the arrivals hall. If you are planning to take the train you need to take the train to Malaga and get off at the central Alameda stop. From there you will need to walk around 10 minutes to reach the bus station.
Once you arrive in Malaga city you will need to head for the main coach station where you will be able to pick up a coach or a bus service into the centre of Nerja. Coach services are faster and will take around one hour. The bus services tend to stop in a number of places which makes the journey slower and it could take up to 1.5 hours to reach Nerja. Services leave the bus station for Nerja at least once an hour until around 11pm. You should always check the exact journey times and the cost of the ticket at Malaga bus station.
