Mini guide to La Linea

There is plenty to see and do in La Linea whether you want to sunbathe, take in some history, indulge your passion for sports or use the area as a base to explore the rest of the region. Gibraltar, Sotogrande, Algeciras, Tarifa and even Morocco are all easily accessible from La Linea.

Sports fans have plenty to occupy them in La Linea and the area is lucky enough to have a handful of world-class golf courses on the doorstep. Valderrama, which has been used for the Ryder Cup competition, San Roque and Sotogrande are all within easy reach of the town. If you want to travel further east up the coast then you will find the only links course on the Costa del Sol just a short distance away from La Linea at Alcaidesa.

If water sports are your passion then you can find windsurfing, jet skiing, diving and more at centres along the coast and many of the popular tourist beaches offer pedalos and boat rides. Quite unusually for southern Andalucia and Spain in general, you can even play cricket close to La Linea! There is a cricket team based in Gibraltar which plays regularly. La Linea also offers an abundance of tennis courts and swimming pools. In short, whatever sport you prefer, you will be able to find it here.

Another excellent day out from La Linea is to go dolphin and whale watching in the bay. A number of companies run boat trips and excursions so you can see some of these wonderful creatures.

Due to the geographical position of La Linea, the town is an ideal place to trade. Most of the trading mainly takes place between the town and Gibraltar itself in products such as cereals, fruit and vegetables. This also means that there is a wonderful weekly market in La Linea where you can stock up on fresh fruit and veg and pick up a wide variety of goods from clothes to antiques! The market takes place on Avenida Principe every Wednesday.

Travelling outside La Linea and the most popular place to visit is the British colony of Gibraltar, which is literally five minutes away. You can drive to La Linea and then cross the border into Gibraltar on foot. Border checks are in place for both Britain and Spain and you will always need to take your passport with you when travelling in or out of Gibraltar.

As well as shopping, Gibraltar is a very popular destination for a good night out as there is a wide selection of bars and restaurants of all different nationalities which stay open till the late hours.

If you are interested in trying your hand at something a little different, then around half an hour outside La Linea you will find the town of Sotogrande, which is famous for its polo club! Sotogrande Polo Club is the only one in Europe where it is possible to play polo throughout the year. Trainers at the club hold classes for regular players but they also offer training for beginners.
