Mini guide to La Cala
The village of La Cala lies at the centre of Mijas Costa, which is the municipal area that lies between Marbella and Benalmadena. In addition to being a fantastic place to live and spend your holidays, La Cala is a great base from which to explore the wider area of southern Andalucia.

The village has a fantastic market every Wednesday and Saturday morning, where you can wander around and pick up some food, clothes, souvenirs and plenty more.
The beach is the heart of life in La Cala and there are many fantastic beach bars where you can hire a sun lounger and while away the sunny days with a good book.
If you are in the mood for something a little more energetic then during the summer months La Cala beach is a centre for water sports such as jet skiing, water skiing, windsurfing and many others. Away from the beach and there are three excellent golf courses, riding schools, a racecourse and numerous swimming pools and tennis courts. La Cala also has a centre of culture where you can take classes in Spanish and keep fit activities.

As La Cala is so well located, you can easily travel to any number of fantastic places from here including Fuengirola, Mijas Pueblo, Marbella, Malaga, Nerja, Ronda and Gibraltar.
Fuengirola and Marbella are both easily accessible by car or on the M220 bus route, which runs directly to the centre of each town. Fuengirola and Marbella are both lively places with excellent shopping and leisure facilities. Miramar Parque in Fuengirola and La Canada in Marbella are indoor shopping centres with cinemas that show some films in English.
There is also a zoo in the heart of Fuengirola, a castle and a water park where you can take the kids for a great day out. Ten minutes further on past Fuengirola and you will arrive in Benalmadena – another popular tourist resort that is home to the Tivoli Amusement Park, a Sea Life centre and the Selwo marina.
A great day trip from La Cala is a visit to Mijas Pueblo, a typical Andalucian white town where you can travel in a burro (donkey) taxi and take in the amazing views of the coast and the surrounding countryside. For sightseeing, then the historic town of Ronda is hard to beat and it is just an hour and a half inland from La Cala!

The major city of Malaga is a 35 minute drive from La Cala but it is well worth the trip. There are lots of things to see and do in Malaga including the famous Picasso Museum, where you can see many original works of art by Malaga’s most famous son. The Cervantes open air amphitheatre and the palace are all well worth a visit too. The popular red bus tours operate in Malaga and if you hop on one of the open air buses, you will see all the city’s sites from the comfort of your seat! You can hop on and off the bus wherever you like so you can explore the places that interest you most.
If you would like a little reminder of Britain then the outpost of Gibraltar is also about an hour and a half down the coast from La Cala. If you do head down to Gibraltar then remember to take your passport with you as you will need to show it to the Spanish and British police who patrol the border.
Whatever you decide to do and wherever you decide to go, La Cala is a fantastic place for holiday and for basing yourself all year round. As there is such a large English-speaking population here you will find it easy to live your day to day life and to access information and services such as schools, doctors, dentists and banking.
