Exploring La Cala
La Cala is an exclusive residential and recreational area situated between the Sierra de Mijas Natural Park and the Mediterranean Sea. It is just 20 minutes by car from Marbella and 30 minutes from Malaga International Airport.
There is plenty to do in La Cala, whether you just want to relax and soak up some sun or you are looking to take part in some more energetic activities! Sports fans are spoilt for choice in La Cala, and there are plenty of places to take part as well as to simply observe the action!
La Cala has developed into an extremely popular destination for golfers as it now offers three 18 hole championship golf complexes and a top class 6 hole par 3 layout. La Cala Golf, El Chaparral and Santana Golf each offer a different level of challenge and so the area is not just for the experienced golfer. Complete beginners and people of all playing standards can enjoy the world class golf facilities in La Cala. The courses are open to non members and you can even take some lessons to improve your swing.
Not far out of La Cala, is the Costa del Sol Hipodromo, which is a horse racing track. A visit to the races makes a great Sunday lunch time trip during the winter months or something a bit different to do on a Saturday night in the summer months. The horse racing course has 2 tracks, which are both floodlit for night racing, and a grandstand that holds 5000 people. There are restaurants, bars, and if you are feeling lucky you can have a flutter at the Tote style betting kiosk. Quite often on a Sunday there is live entertainment and the on-site restaurant serves a fantastic Sunday roast carvery.
Still on the subject of horses, La Cala has an abundance of horse riding facilities. The Hipodromo offers riding lessons in a ménage but there are a few stables where you can go to trek out into the lovely Spanish countryside. El Jinete riding stables are just on the outskirts of the town and prices are based on an hourly rate. There is also a riding school at the La Cala de Mijas Resort Hotel. The Hotel is a high class hotel with many on-site golfing facilities as well as tennis, squash, a health spa and as mentioned previously horse riding. It is a traditional Andalucian style hotel offering spacious rooms, wide terraces and stunning views of the surrounding national park. It’s excellent accommodation for a higher budget.
A number of local football teams play on Sundays in La Cala and there are plenty of swimming pools and tennis courts too.
Shopping in La Cala is excellent for food and other basics and there are a growing number of small boutiques and shoe shops which are catering for both the tourists and the local residents.
La Cala also hosts a big market every Wednesday and Saturday morning on the feria ground, which is just on the perimeter of the town centre. This is a good market and sells many different products such as fresh fruit and vegetables, spices, fresh cut flowers, plants, clothes, towels, ceramics, shoes, bags, gifts and many more things. It is well worth a wander round. For more extensive clothes shopping you can hop on the M220 to Fuengirola or visit the large La Canada centre just outside Marbella.
