Getting to Estepona
Estepona is located to the west of the Costa del Sol a short drive from Gibraltar airport.
During recent years the relations between Gibraltar and Spain have improved and the rules on the amount of flights that can take off and land at the airport have been relaxed. This means travelling to Gibraltar and the western side of Andalucia from the UK & Ireland is now easier. A new airline serving the whole of the UK & Ireland is also planning to commence flights soon.
Malaga international airport is also within easy driving distance of Estepona. Malaga airport offers a wide range of low cost carriers and standard carriers and currently offers routes to and from more than 26 airports in the UK & Ireland.
Once you have landed at your chosen airport then Estepona is very easy to find. The town can be reached by travelling from either direction along the N340/A7 coast road. Estepona is situated between San Pedro de Alcantara and Sabinillas.
If you are driving to Estepona from the direction of Gibraltar or Algeciras, then you will need to follow signs towards San Roque, Sotogrande and Manilva from the main A7 / N340 coast road or from the AP7 toll road. Estepona is well signed from both routes and you will have no problems finding your way here from either of these main roads.
If you are planning to drive to Estepona from Malaga airport, then you will need to follow signs in the direction of Cadiz and Algeciras. Take the MA21 when you come out of the airport and then follow signs towards the A7 / N340 coast road. Once you are on the main A7 you can either stay on this road or take the signs for the AP7 toll road. Although you will have to pay to use each section of the toll road, it is a much faster route and there is also a lot less traffic – especially during the summer months. If you want to arrive in Estepona by the shortest and fastest route, then the toll road is your best bet – just make sure you have some euros in the car!
Whichever way you go, you drive past Benalmadena, Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Marbella and San Pedro de Alcantara before you arrive in Estepona.
If you would like to use public transport to get to Estepona then the easiest thing to do is to take the bus. No train service currently runs to Estepona but you can get to the area easily from the direction of Gibraltar and Marbella / Malaga by bus.
Travellers from Malaga airport should take the coach that runs from the airport direct to Marbella bus station. Once you arrive at Marbella you can easily catch a local service to Estepona. The other alternative is to take a local train or bus from Malaga airport to Malaga bus station. From Malaga bus station you can catch a direct service to Estepona.
Those people who would like to travel from Gibraltar will need to cross the border into Spain at La Linea and pick up an Estepona-bound bus from there.
People coming on public transport from the centre or north of Spain can take a train to either Malaga or Algeciras and then continue the journey to Estepona by bus. And of course if you are lucky enough to own your own boat then you could even sail into Estepona!
