Mini guide to Coin

The pretty inland town of Coin is situated in the Guadalhorce Valley within easy reach of Malaga, the coast and the upmarket shopping areas and resorts of Marbella and Puerto Banus.

The valley itself is also surrounded by some absolutely stunning natural parkland including the Sierra de las Nieves, the Ardales Lakes and El Chorro Gorge. The countryside is dotted with cork forests, oak trees and an abundance of wild herbs. The entire area is rich in arable and citrus crops and benefits from a temperate climate and excellent soils and growing conditions.

Coin is a major centre for the equestrian industry and the countryside surrounding the town offers some stunning riding terrain. There are also a variety of riding schools and stables in the area. Golf is also very popular and visitors to Coin can play at the nearby Lauro Golf Club or the Alhaurin Golf Club.

If you would like to learn something about the history of Coin then there are a variety of museums and sites of interest that you can visit. Coin has its own Ceramics Museum and a Museum of Archaeological Artefacts too.

The village is famous for its churches, each of which has its own interesting story to tell. The first church in the area was Santa Maria de la Encarnation, which was built on the site of an old Mosque. The Mosque’s minaret is now featured as the bell tower and much of the building is adorned with Moorish decorations.

Another significant church building is the Church of San Juan which is now a national monument. It is also one of the largest churches in Malaga province. At the side of the feria ground in Coin you will find the chapel of Nuestra Senora de Fuensanta. The church has been well preserved and has fantastic views across the valley. At the side of the chapel is an old abandoned church house which represents a sadder side to Coin’s past. In 1893 the church house was the scene of a crime which shocked the region. The local priest was murdered by burglars who thought that he had hidden a large sum of money in the house. The sad tale is told in a book by Bartolome Abelenda which is called The Coin Crime.

If you are looking for some more light hearted facts about Coin then fans of soap operas will be interested to learn that Coin was the location for the BBC´s Eldorado! The programme depicted the lifestyle of expatriates in Spain and was filmed in the Ciudad de Coin studios, which are just outside the town centre on the road to Marbella. The studios still exists and have now been developed into a hotel and restaurant complex. Unfortunately the programme failed to convince viewers and it was taken off the air after just one year. Wherever your interests lie; sports, history, culture or just relaxation, Coin has something to offer everyone. It is a wonderful place in which to base yourself and the whole of the fascinating region of Andalucia is within a few hours drive.
