Mini guide to Casares

In addition to the many attractions of the village itself, there are a variety of sites of interest to visit in the area surrounding Casares.

In a valley to the south, heading towards Manilva, you can visit the remains of a number of Moorish flour mills. The mills used to operate using the water from the Rio Manilva and the local Albaran stream and played a vital part in the local agriculture industry. Today you can reach them by taking the Calle Molino in Casares and heading down into the valley. There is also a track, which leads from the direction of the Roman Baths at Manilva to the mills, which is signposted in some areas.

Head south west from Casares and you will soon come across the area of Manilva, which is famous for its wine making as well as for being the home of the Roman Baths. Vineyards surround the town and the annual grape harvest in September produces a sweet Moscatel-type wine which is best drunk as soon as possible!

Manilva also has a rich history which can be traced back to pre Roman times. The Roman Sulphur Baths and the Roman Aqueduct are both popular tourist attractions and are within easy reach of Casares. Julius Caesar is believed to have bathed in the healing waters of the Roman baths many times. A visit to the baths is possible but they can be quite difficult to find and you need to ask directions before you set off. Visit the tourist office in Casares or Manilva before you set off to make sure you do not miss them.

Take a short drive from Casares and you will come across another beautiful white town – Gaucin. The village is smaller than Casares and has a population of just 2000 people. Perched high at the top of a mountain, the village’s position meant it was an important strategic viewpoint and a major Roman settlement. Gaucin´s castle dates back to Roman times and it was later taken over and enlarged to make a solid fortress. The castle area is known for the eagles that often circle its towers. Visitors can see the castle most days between 11am and 2pm and 5pm and 7pm.

Another major benefit of basing yourself in Casares is that you are just a short drive away from some of the finest beaches in southern Andalucia. Casares Costa has miles of golden sandy beaches and you are also close to tourist centres at Estepona, Manilva, Sabinillas and Duquesa. The popularity of these areas means that you can find every amenity there as well as many places to spend the days relaxing on the beach or taking day trips. There are sports marinas at both Estepona and Duquesa where you can take a boat trip along the coast or try your hand at water sports such as water skiing, jet skiing etc. There are fantastic weekly markets at both of the ports as well as a wide selection of bars, restaurants and small, artisan shops.

Other excellent day trips from Casares include a visit to the Selwo Adventure Park, where you can see more than 2000 species of animals. You can also spend a day visiting the British outpost of Gibraltar, where you can see the only colony of wild Barbary Apes in Europe.

Sports fans can enjoy the fantastic leisure facilities that are available right along the coast. Golfers will appreciate the numerous world class courses available including the famous Valderrama and the links course at Alcaidesa.

The natural mountain scenery provides excellent hiking and horse riding terrain and there are also polo, water sports, tennis, football, swimming and many more sports available close to Casares.

Whatever you are looking for from Spain: relaxation, history, culture or nature, you are spoilt for choice in Casares.
