Mini guide to Calahonda

Shopping, sports or beach life, whatever you are looking for you can be sure that you are going to find it in Calahonda. The development is brilliantly located close to Marbella and within easy commuting distance of Malaga airport. Whichever way you go from Calahonda, you will come across fantastic shopping facilities, beautiful beaches and gorgeous Spanish villages.

If you are going to be staying in Calahonda then one place you simply must visit is the wonderful resort and town of Marbella. Marbella is famous as an exclusive resort that has always attracted the wealthy and the famous to its golden beaches. It is a wonderful resort town but it is also much more than that. Marbella has a beautiful old town where you can wander the shady cobbled streets admiring the wonderful architecture and taking rest in one of the many pavement cafes and tapas bars.

Another area that is worth a visit while you are in Calahonda is the village of Mijas. Mijas is about a 20 minute drive away from Calahonda on the AP7 toll road and it is typical of the white towns that are dotted across the Andalucian countryside. The village of Mijas offers fantastic panoramic views of the coast as well as the surrounding countryside and makes a very enjoyable day trip.

Around 10 minutes further west of Marbella and you will arrive in Puerto Banus, an exclusive port and holiday area that attract the rich and famous from around the world. The port itself is home to hundreds of fantastic yachts and boats and is lined with luxury cars worthy of the latest James Bond film. Puerto Banus is also home to many exclusive shops with world famous brands such as Luis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Chanel and Jimmy Choo all with shops here. And even if you are not lucky enough to be able to shop in the gorgeous boutiques – you can always take a peak and dream of how the other half live!

Travel just five minutes east of Calahonda and you will find yourself in the lovely Spanish village of La Cala de Mijas. La Cala, as it is known, is a completely self-contained beachside area, which has lots of shops, banks, restaurants and services. It is a great place to head for if all you want to do is laze around on the beach on those days when you don’t want to travel to far.

Another great day trip from Calahonda is a visit to the British outpost of Gibraltar. If you travel on the AP7 toll road you will be able to reach Gibraltar in just over one hour. If you have never been here before it is a fascinating place where you can witness how the British and Spanish cultures have merged together to create a place unlike any other. Native Gibraltans are completely bilingual and have adopted the characteristics of both Spain and Britain.

Entering Gibraltar is an experience in itself and, be warned, you will need your passport with you when you cross the border as both Spanish and British police patrol the entry point. The border point at Gibraltar is actually at Gibraltar’s airport so you have the unique experience of driving across the airport runway to enter the colony! Once you are there you will be able to spend your British Pounds and post your letters and postcards in some familiar red post boxes! Many Spanish and British people work in Gibraltar and live across the border in Spain. And many more make regular journeys to the rock to buy cheap petrol, cigarettes and alcohol. If you make the trip to Gibraltar you will be able to shop in Marks and Spencer, Next and even buy some food in Morrison’s supermarket!

Gibraltar is also home to Europe’s only colony of Barbary Apes, which live in the wild. The apes attract hundreds of tourists who can travel by cable car up to the ape station at the top of the Rock. Once you reach the top you can watch the apes and enjoy amazing views of the Spanish coast and Morocco.

The historic town of Rhonda is also within easy driving distance of Calahonda and is another excellent destination for a day trip or a short break. Whatever you want to do – lie back and relax on the coast, play some sports or take in some history – Calahonda has it all within easy reach.
