Exploring Calahonda

There is plenty to do in both Calahonda and the area surrounding it. Calahonda is situated at the heart of southern Andalucia and it is a fantastic base for exploring the entire region.

In Calahonda itself, there are a variety of excellent golf courses, sports clubs, tennis courts, bars, restaurants, beaches and shopping zones to while away your time. In fact this part of the coast is an absolute dream for golf fans, with 10 excellent courses close by!

The stretch of coastline around Calahonda also has its own port, called Puerto de Cabopino. This is a wonderful place to spend the days trying your hand at water sports such as jet skiing, water skiing, kite surfing or just relaxing under the hot sun. When you’ve tired yourself out on the beach you can relax in one of the restaurants and bars that surround the port itself and admire some of the wonderful boats moored there.

On to more practical matters and Calahonda is very well served by chemists and healthcare facilities. The modern Costa del Sol hospital is a short drive away from Calahonda and there are also three medical centres on the development.

A great way to spend some time when you are in Calahonda is in the nearby town of Marbella. Famous the world over for its beautiful beaches and chic, stylish bars and restaurants, Marbella is often described as the jewel in the crown of southern Andalucia.

The town is split into two distinct parts of the old town and the beach area with the two areas split by the main road running through the area. There is also a more modern area, where you can find many shops, including the department store El Corte Ingles, and services such as banks etc.

The old town is a perfectly-preserved example of the best of traditional Spanish living with narrow cobbled streets, leafy squares filled with fruit trees, and beautiful churches. You can wander round the old town for hours exploring the many shoe shops, exclusive boutiques, cafes and antique bodegas.

A short walk from the old town and you will arrive at the Avenida del Mar or road to the sea, which connects the shopping area to the seafront. If you walk down this area you will see a collection of wonderful bronze statues and sculptures by the artist Salvador Dali. Flanking the statues are various fountains, shops, bars and restaurants where you can sit and enjoy the ambience. At the end of the Avenida del Mar you will reach the seafront with its vast golden sands, appetising fish restaurants and tourist facilities. The beach at Marbella has something for everyone with sports facilities, boat trips, children’s playgrounds, a tourist train and numerous places to each.

If you want to do some shopping or treat yourself to some new clothes then you will find the commercial centre of La Canada about 10 minutes away from Calahonda. La Canada is the biggest shopping mall on the coast and it has everything including a massive food court, supermarket, bowling alley, cinema and hundreds of shops! Here you will find all your high street favourites from both the UK and Spain including Top Shop, Dorothy Perkins, Wallis, Evans, Zara, Mango and there is even a branch of The Body Shop! La Canada is where everyone on the coast heads for clothes, house wares, sports goods or just to see a film.

Drive about 15 minutes from Calahonda in the opposite direction to Marbella and you will arrive at the perennially popular town and seaside resort of Fuengirola. Fuengirola was one of the first areas in southern Andalucia to really experience the boom in tourism and for that reason the facilities and shops for both visitors and residents are extremely well developed.

Fuengirola also has fantastic shopping with a large indoor centre called Miramar Park. As well as great shops, you will also find a cinema and many restaurants at Miramar. It’s a great place to go if you want to take refuge from the sun for a while or if you are visiting southern Andalucia during the colder months.

Outside and Fuengirola also has a zoo, street markets, a castle, miles and miles of beach and much more – and all this is within minutes of Calahonda!
