Exploring Alhaurin El Grande

Spending time in Alhaurin el Grande is a pleasure, whether you are just in the area for a short holiday or you are planning to base yourself in the village permanently.

In the village of Alhaurin el Grande itself, you will find plenty to occupy your time as you enjoy the warm Spanish sun and the traditional Andalucian ambience that surrounds the area.

One of the most famous attractions of the village is the old Moorish Cork Mill. The mill is known as El Molino Morisco de los Corchos and it dates back to the 14th century. The mill is now privately owned but it is still a popular tourist draw and, amazingly, it continues to work to this day!

Head into the centre of the old town in Alhaurin el Grande and you will soon come across the famous church of San Sebastian. Painted all in white, the church is a local landmark. Just next door to the church, you will find more evidence of the areas Moorish past. The Arcos de Cobertizo archway is an original Moorish structure dating back to the 12th century.

Sports fans will also find plenty to do in Alhaurin el Grande. In the past decade the area has, along with the rest of southern Andalucia, become something of a centre for golfing excellence.

Golfers will find a number of excellent courses in and around Alhaurin. There are two large courses in the village itself – the Alhaurin Golf Resort and Country Club, and Lauro Golf. Both offer excellent playing and facilities.

If you are not a fan of golf then you don’t need to worry! There are many more sports and leisure facilities available in Alhaurin el Grande. Horse riding is very popular in this area and the landscape and beautiful countryside provide the perfect riding and trekking territory. You will find a variety of riding schools and stables offering lessons for beginners and more advanced riders. Many of the larger country houses and villas in this area also offer their own stable and riding facilities too. If you are a fan of all types of country pursuits then you will also appreciate that Alhaurin el Grande offers its own shooting ground. In addition to these sports you will also find plenty of swimming pools, tennis courts and routes suitable for bike riding. Whatever your sport, you will find plenty of time and space to do it in Alhaurin el Grande.

If you would like to explore a little further afield then there are lots of picturesque towns and villages around Alhaurin el Grande that are worthy of a day trip or even longer. Coin, Monda, Tollox, Malaga and Marbella are all within easy reach and have plenty to offer in terms of history, sight-seeing and leisure time.

A fantastic day trip from Alhaurin el Grande is to visit the beautiful coastal resort of Marbella, which is just a short drive away. Marbella is often referred to as the jewel of southern Andalucia and it’s easy to see why. The beautiful Casco Antiguo, or old town, is spectacular with many beautiful building, leafy orange-scented squares, picturesque churches and fantastic restaurants and bars. Marbella is a wonderful place for shopping with a large selection of boutiques and department stores.

Stroll five minutes from the old town and you will be on the main beach front with its fantastic paseo, which is just perfect for an afternoon stroll. The entire beachfront is lined with bars, restaurants and shops and is a great place to sunbathe or to while away an afternoon eating and watching the world go by.

Art lovers should also pay a visit to the Avenida del Mar, the stretch of fountain-strewn walkway that leads from the old town to the sea. Here you will find a collection of stunning statues, sculpted by Salvador Dali, one of Spain’s most famous sons.

Drive a few kilometres further west from Marbella and you will find yourself in the famous resort of Puerto Banus. If you are a fan of shopping, boats, or both, then you will be amazed by what Puerto Banus has to offer.

The area is famous for its shopping and most of the world’s most famous brands and designers have shops here. You can choose from Dolce and Gabanna, Chloe, Luis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Versace and just about any top designer you can think of!

The port itself is home to 110s of stunning boats and yachts which are moored in the marina all year round. A visit to Puerto Banus is worth it simply to see the range of luxury yachts at the port and the expensive cars that line the portside – a wonderful place to people watch and enjoy something to eat. Both Marbella and Puerto Banus are very easy to reach from Alhaurin el Grande, and a visit to southern Andalucia just won’t be complete without seeing them!
